This is the second blog post in our "Leadership Spotlight” series. Last time, we introduced you to our Director of Engineering, Tyler Kivari.

We are kicking off June with another team member introduction!

Our team members are the foundation of who we are and how we do what we do at Zensurance. They are the masterminds behind our work. That’s why we would like to introduce you to David Onaolopo.

David is currently one of our Intermediate Software Developers.

What do you do at Zensurance?

I am a Software Engineer for the Applications team. The applications team mainly builds and maintains the front-end part of the Zensurance customer application and broker application. We also write and maintain some back-end code, but not any part of the back-end that involves pricing and major business logic.

What led you to this career?

I was actually an aerospace engineer for over 4 years, but I picked up software development because of the creative freedom you get when writing code to solve a problem or build a feature. With software engineering there are always multiple ways to solve a given problem and an array of tools to pick from (pun intended ;)). It’s up to the developer to pick the better options or learn ways to do so, if there is a knowledge gap. It’s a continuous problem solving and learning cycle, and I always love me a good puzzle, so I never looked back.

What is the most exciting part of your job?

Knowing that my work directly impacts the customer’s experience using the application!

How do you prefer to start your day?

I wish I had an exciting answer to this question, but honestly, my preference is to just roll out of bed and begin to write some code or figure out a problem. My mind is usually raring to go when I wake up, so I usually like to take advantage. Other things come during my breaks.

Why do you like working at Zensurance?

The culture at Zensurance is just amazing. The company genuinely cares about the well-being of the employees and that’s gold. There is an environment that fosters hearing and being heard. I also love my team, great people!

What motivates you to achieve success?

In one word, family. I have always had the drive to make my family proud, because they are the reason I am where I am today. Also, the more successful I am, the better I can take care of them. They deserve the world!

Are there any training/courses you are attending?

Not as I answer this question, but within the coming days, I plan on starting a 6 months DevOps program. Excited about that!

What are your hobbies?

I love to mix music, play soccer, play madden, watch a good show and play board games.

Here is me playing Madden!

What is your favourite music genre?

This is a tough one. As a Dj, I mix and enjoy listening to different genres of music, but if I had to pick one, I would go with Afrobeats, just because that is the genre I listen to the most.

Here is a photo of my DJ Set!

Where is your favourite place to travel?

I have not travelled the world much. Johannesburg is one city I really want to visit because I love South African music. I have a feeling that it would be fitting for my answer to this question. I will let you know if it lives up to the hype, fingers are crossed, hehe.
