Selling Used Devices

Spring is in the air and this also means a lot of people are reselling or tossing unused items to send to a better home, or to be recycled (if possible), or simply to the dump (if not possible).

We need to be aware of the data that is contained on devices we are selling and ensure they are properly wiped before sending them to their next destination! A recent investigation found that over 50% of companies failed to properly "wipe" or remove sensitive data from devices before reselling them!

Fortunately, this is very easy to do.

Windows devices

Windows 8/10/11 all offer the ability to easily wipe and securely erase data from a device. Please make sure to do so before selling/recycling/sending to a new home. Alternatively you can opt to keep the drive. For older machines, projects such as dban and HDD LLF are available.

Apple devices

iOS devices have an easy to use erase option in the settings, make sure to select the option that completely wipes the device and not just the settings though! If you are reselling, make sure to remove the device from your iCloud account or you might lockout the buyer. Mac OS also offers similar functionality!

Android devices

The process will vary depending on the OS and software configuration by the manufacturer, but usually you can fully erase and wipe a device by using an option in the recovery or settings menu.

Routers/Networking gear

When logging into the device (or opening the app) you should have the option to erase and wipe the configuration to prep for resale!

Gaming consoles

There will generally be an option to wipe the device in the settings on recent devices. However, on older devices, you may have to manually remove the data stored on it. If you are unsure, consult the manufacturer.

Chrome OS

This is called Powerwash and can be performed by following these simple steps.

Remotely controlled equipment (lights, garage door openers, etc)

Make sure to remove the devices from your account to allow the buyer to re-use them, as well as allowing you to not see old devices!

I hope the above information helps you keep your devices and personal life safe and secure!
